Give a Radio
Portable radios (often referred to as Portable Missionaries -PMs) are the means by which people in many
remote areas of the world are able to listen to FEBC's broadcasts. In
many of these areas a large proportion of the people cannot read or
write, so radio is a key means of communication. The radios are
pre-tuned to the relevant FEBC station/s, where listeners can hear not
only the Gospel message, but also music, news and other quality-of-life
programs designed to enhance their daily lives.
What makes a radio different from other missionaries?
- It can enter countries where human missionaries are not allowed.
- It doesn't need a visa or passport.
- It doesn't need language training, and can speak the language of the country from the moment it arrives.
- It speaks many languages and dialects.
- It doesn't require an allowance.
- It's immune from tropical diseases.
- It never needs a holiday and is available to work 24 hours a day.
FEBC staff seek to provide listeners with the PM radio
that is most suited to their location and circumstances, whether it be a
solar-powered radio or a wind-up model. The radios are distributed in countries such as Cambodia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Thailand and the Philippines.
A listener writes - 'I cried when I received my radio. Now my family is so happy because we can listen to Christian programs whenever we want.'
These portable radios come in a number of formats, and cost
only AUD30 each.
A note received from one of our fields shows the impact of radios that are distributed –
'We sent an initial 80 radios off...into very difficult situations.
Sometimes, one radio serves 5 Churches or maybe 7 families, and they
take turns by 3 days or a week as their share and then it is handed on
to the next. We also have news from many, many places of people
listening regularly before they believe.'
