Update on flood response in Pakistan

There is still much to do in Pakistan. Radios are continuing to be distributed, mainly through our ministry partners, and the radio programmes are transitioning to more rehabilitation-oriented topics.

On short wave, covering the whole of Pakistan, the magazine programme Along with Life has included daily flood-related features, and Siraiki language programmes have also been responding to the situation.

Programming for communities
As part of disaster response, Hazeen, from Feba Pakistan (FEBC's sister mission), journeyed to flood-affected Charsadda distributing radios and training local people in making radio programmes for their communities. He went back recently to see how they were getting on.

The team have been producing three 10-minute flood-related segments per week, called New Dawn, which have been aired in Pashto on the local FM station for an initial 13 weeks. Thanks to generous financial support, this is now being extended further, and our hope is that the broadcast will be able to continue for at least a year.

Included in the segments are text and phone messages from listeners. The programmes are covering topics such as:
• Polio vaccinations
• TB programme
• Malaria
• Dengue fever
• Psychological effects on children

New opportunities
The radio broadcasts are opening up new opportunities in this area. The New Dawn, team were able to visit a village known for having a high crime rate particularly revenge killings. Hazeen explains: “People inherit family enemies through the generations. The revenge they have to take is their family inheritance.”

The team took medical supplies with them to the village, as the people hadn’t received anything after the flood. This was a long awaited for opportunity to visit this area, made possible because of radio. Many listeners to the New Dawn programme invite the team to visit.

As followers of Jesus, Feba is serving those affected by the flooding both practically and spiritually. Generous financial support has also made possible the production and airing of an Urdu series New Determination, which examines the flood situation from a biblical perspective. Feba’s programming is stimulating people’s thoughts and community discussion on the, often overlooked, spiritual level.

Relief still ongoing
Some of who have been affected are moving from relief to rehabilitation.

Thank you for raising financial support and for praying for the flood disaster response in Pakistan - keep on as relief is still needed.

Prayer Points

  • Pray for people who are still awaiting financial support from the government to begin rebuilding their homes and replanting their crops. Pray that they will feel love and support through the flood programming.
  • Pray for the Pashto programme producers that they will be inspired to write topics and collect community feedback, helping build up strong communities.
  • Pray for the Sindhi programme partners who are distributing radios in hard-to-reach areas of Pakistan. Pray that the relationships will grow strong in the community as they listen to programmes together and use the information to rebuild not only their homes but the regular rhythm of life again.
