A Buddhist monk comes to know God
The word of Jesus has a message for every human heart. This story
from a Buddhist monk shows once again just how powerful the work of God
can be through the medium of radio.
‘I left home and moved into a Buddhist monastery when I was 13 to
begin my studies. By the time I was 15, I had become a junior Buddhist
monk. This was a very honourable achievement for me and my family. They
hoped I would become the high priest of their village one day, an
important position in their community.
As he continued his studies, God began to work….
I’d been fascinated with religion and the nature of God ever since I
was young. I also like to read, and I read a few Christian Burmese
books that piqued my interest. Around the same time, I began listening
to FEBC broadcasts.
How did he find out about FEBC?
When I lived in the monastery, a local Christian man regularly visited
us. He was very nice and we all considered him our friend. One day he
told us about a Pa’O broadcast offered through FEBC. The first time I
heard my own language on the radio was thrilling! Later I found it was
a Christian program with lots of talk about God, which is exactly what
I had been looking for: answers to my questions about God. I became a
regular listener.
And God continued to work…
Not long after I began listening to your broadcasts I accepted Jesus as
my personal Saviour. I also tuned into your Burmese language
broadcasts. By then I was 30 years old; for 17 years I had lived as a
Buddhist monk, so I didn’t know how to live like a Christian. It was
difficult to suddenly change my lifestyle. I unfortunately didn’t tell
anyone about my conversion for 3 years, and continued to live in the
monastery.
When I became a Christian, my family, relatives and community
abandoned me. But I’m still going back to share the Good News with
them. Even if only one person listens, it will be worth it!’
There was a hunger in this man’s heart for Jesus. And when he
tuned into our Pa’O broadcasts, the Spirit of God moved in a powerful
way and he came to know Jesus as his personal Saviour.
